This policy covers the current Android testing version of Trailhead Field Kit, package com.aspirefoundry.trailhead_field_kit. Aspire Foundry provides outdoor navigation and field reference features. Contact aspirefoundry@gmail.com with privacy questions.
Location and trip recording
With your permission, the app uses device location, including precise coordinates, altitude, accuracy, and timestamps, to show your position and elevation, calculate distance and direction to saved places such as your vehicle, record trips, and estimate nearby mountain identities. Precise location improves these features; approximate location may reduce accuracy.
The current app uses location while active. It does not implement background trip tracking. Location updates stop and trip recording pauses when the app goes into the background. Saved places and recorded trip points are stored on your device, not uploaded to an Aspire Foundry server. Optional online requests disclose geographic areas as explained below.
Camera and device sensors
The optional live Peaks view uses the rear camera to display your surroundings with estimated mountain labels. Camera images are not uploaded, and this version does not save photos or record video. Audio recording is disabled. The camera stops when you leave the Peaks tab or put the app in the background.
Compass, orientation, and pressure sensors supply heading, camera direction, and barometric readings. Calculations use these readings on your device. This version does not require microphone, contacts, or broad shared-storage access.
Optional maps and mountain downloads
Online maps are enabled by your choice and request map tiles from OpenStreetMap servers at tile.openstreetmap.org. The server receives your IP address, requested tile coordinates, and ordinary network request information. Tile coordinates identify the geographic area being viewed, which may be near your location.
When you choose to download mountain information for your location, the app sends a bounding area derived from your coordinates to the USGS National Map summit-name service at carto.nationalmap.gov. It also requests geographic elevation tiles from the public terrain dataset hosted on Amazon Web Services at s3.amazonaws.com. These services receive your IP address, the requested geographic area, and ordinary network request information. Requested areas can reveal where you are looking or planning to travel. Your saved place names, full trip history, checklist notes, and camera images are not included in these requests.
Downloaded summit names and terrain are cached on your device for later use. Bundled sample terrain can be viewed without downloading a region. This version uses OpenStreetMap, not the Google Maps SDK.
These providers operate under their own privacy practices, including their handling and retention of server logs. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy, USGS privacy information, and AWS privacy notice.
Local storage, retention, and deletion
The app stores saved places, trip tracks, checklist items and notes, preferences, and downloaded mountain information in its local app storage. These remain until removed or replaced by app actions, or until you clear the app’s storage or uninstall it. To remove all local app information on Android, open Settings, Apps, Trailhead Field Kit, Storage, then Clear data or Clear storage. This resets your saved information and settings.
Operating-system backup or device-transfer features may separately copy app data depending on your device settings. Backup copies are governed by your backup provider’s settings and retention practices. Aspire Foundry cannot remotely retrieve or delete information that exists only on your device.
Your permission choices
You can deny or revoke location and camera permissions through Android’s app settings. Location-dependent features will be limited without location access; the live Peaks view needs camera access. The checklist, field skills, and bundled terrain preview can be used without those permissions. Internet access supports online maps, downloads, and external links.
Support and external links
If you email us, we and our email provider receive your address and whatever you include. We use messages to provide support and retain them while needed for the enquiry, follow-up, and applicable obligations. Do not send private coordinates or trip details unless necessary for the issue. External website links open services governed by their own privacy policies.
Security, rights, and children’s privacy
Map and terrain requests use HTTPS. No storage or transmission method is completely secure. Providers may process requests in the United States and other countries. Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information, object to or restrict processing, and complain to a relevant authority. Email us with “Privacy request” and the app name so we can address information we hold. We may need limited verification and may retain records required for legal obligations or unresolved disputes.
The app does not request a name, age, or personal profile. We do not knowingly solicit personal information from children under 13. Contact us if you believe a child has provided personal information so we can investigate.
Policy updates
We will update this policy and its effective date when practices change, including before adding a different map provider, accounts, subscriptions, or new data uses. The website’s own hosting and privacy information is available on the main privacy page.
